PeaZip was released first time in 2006 and is a free open source program to create and extract archives and compressed files. It has a good speed of extraction, but at compression it works pretty slow. Is very good regarding the number of extraction formats and is average at compression formats.
Our tests showed that this program is one of the slowest regarding the speed of creating a ZIP archive. This is the major drawback of this program.
It extracts files pretty fast, above the average of top competitors.
It covers all major types of archives, such as .zip, .7z and .gz.
Is very capable when we talk about extraction formats and is better than competition.
PeaZip comes with a variety of options and features. It has a standalone interface where is easy to navigate and open archives, add new files or folders for compression, sort files and enable/disable toolbars. Is able to test archives to find errors.
It includes a password manager and a password generator (also supports keyfile passwords). If you use a regular password for an archive, this can be decrypted with a specialized software, but using a keyfile ensures a higher level of restriction because users need to have that keyfile to open the archive.
Is able to convert an existing archive to another format, accepts multi-volume split (split an archive in multiple parts based on a maximum file size), also allows you to change default theme and opacity.
This free utility includes advanced features, it supports a large number of formats and password protection with key file. Is an useful software and the only drawback is the low speed when you generate an archive.
